Heritage Malta Partners With Eden Leisure Foundation To Restore Grand Master’s Carriage

Heritage Malta has partnered with the Eden Leisure Foundation to fund the restoration of the Grand Master’s carriage, an 18th-century French Berline coach housed in the Grand Master’s Palace, Valletta. This restoration is part of Heritage Malta’s broader conservation project for the Palace, one of their most ambitious efforts, aimed at preserving both the architecture and valuable artefacts like the Grand Master’s carriage.

The carriage, a luxurious coach with green velvet interiors, dates back to the 1780s and was used by several Grand Masters, most notably Ferdinand von Hompesch. A well-known story claims Napoleon Bonaparte refused to ride in it during his time in Malta. The carriage has undergone changes over the centuries, including modifications during the French occupation. The restoration will preserve its historical layers, maintaining its rich narrative.

Noel Zammit, CEO of Heritage Malta, expressed gratitude for the Eden Leisure Foundation’s support in helping restore this iconic piece of Maltese history. Anthony Spagnol, Senior Conservator, emphasized the importance of preserving not just the materials but also the carriage’s historical journey. Kate De Cesare, Chief Sustainability Officer of the Eden Leisure Foundation, highlighted the foundation’s commitment to heritage and their pride in supporting the project.

The restored carriage will eventually be showcased as a centerpiece in the newly renovated Grand Master’s Palace.`
